Anil Deshmukh Demands Release of Chandiwal Commission Report on Extortion Probe

On Tuesday, June 16, 2026, former Maharashtra Home Minister and NCP (SP) leader Anil Deshmukh requested Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma in Mumbai to direct the state government to make public the final report of the Chandiwal Commission. The commission had investigated high-profile extortion allegations leveled against the former minister.
In a formal letter addressed to Governor Varma, Deshmukh pointed out that the state government has failed to release the report despite receiving it more than four years ago. The state government had originally appointed the commission, which was headed by retired Bombay High Court judge Justice K U Chandiwal, to investigate allegations concerning an alleged "Rs 100-crore extortion case."
The controversy began in March 2021, when former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh wrote a letter to the then chief minister. In the letter, Singh alleged that Deshmukh had set a monthly collection target of Rs 100 crore for police officials. Deshmukh denied the allegations but resigned from his post as home minister after the High Court ordered a preliminary inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
According to Deshmukh's letter to the Governor, the Chandiwal Commission completed its probe and submitted a 1,400-page final report on April 26, 2022. Deshmukh stated that he has since written 11 letters to the chief minister requesting the publication of the report. He has also sent letters to the chief secretary and the secretaries of the concerned government departments.
Deshmukh emphasized that the commission's conclusions, observations, and recommendations directly relate to the allegations against him and affect his public and personal rights. He questioned why the report has been kept from the public and why it has not yet been tabled before the state legislature.
In his letter, Deshmukh expressed concern over the lack of transparency, stating that concealing such a report severely undermines faith in the judicial system. He requested Governor Varma to direct the state government to publish the complete report and to examine the reasons behind the long delay in making the document public.
