On Tuesday, June 16, 2026, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated a new "citizen lounge-cum-new-age learning centre" at the New Delhi District Magistrate (DM) office. The dual-purpose space is designed to function as a public waiting lounge during the day and transition into a dedicated community learning centre and study hub in the evening.

The New Delhi DM office is a key public-facing administrative facility that handles essential services, including property registrations, court marriages, and caste and income certificates. The new initiative aims to provide a dignified and comfortable experience for visitors while supporting underprivileged students and job aspirants from nearby areas.

The newly constructed lounge-cum-learning centre has a seating capacity for 40 people. It is equipped with air-conditioners, computers with Wi-Fi connectivity, and a reading corner featuring books ranging from novels to competitive exam preparation materials. The facility also includes basic amenities such as drinking water and a newly built toilet block.

Under the operational schedule, the space will serve as a citizen lounge from 9 am to 3 pm, when the general public visits the DM’s office. An official noted that visitors previously had to wait in long queues or in the open, including couples in wedding outfits waiting for court marriages. Visitors can now wait in the air-conditioned lounge until their turn.

After 3 pm, the facility will open its doors to students preparing for competitive examinations and children from nearby settlements and economically weaker sections.

During her inspection of the lounge, library, and toilet block, Chief Minister Gupta described the initiative as an excellent example of good governance and public service. She stated that the facility represents a new approach to administration, ensuring that children from underprivileged backgrounds can benefit from resources that are not easily accessible to them.

Officials added that they plan to invite student volunteers on weekends to teach extracurricular activities, such as music and painting, to children from nearby slums. The administration intends to purchase equipment, including guitars and paints, to keep in the library for these activities.
