Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Lash Delhi-NCR After IMD Issues Red Alert

Parts of Delhi-NCR witnessed rain and gusty winds on Thursday night as weather conditions changed abruptly across the region, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the national capital. The sudden change in weather conditions prompted warnings of severe thunderstorms and strong winds.
The red alert, which is the highest level of weather warning issued by the IMD, indicates the possibility of severe weather conditions that may pose risks to life and property, requiring immediate precautionary measures. The weather department warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, dust-raising winds, and intense surface winds.
According to the IMD, surface winds are expected to reach speeds of 70 to 80 kmph, with gusts potentially touching 90 kmph. While weather officials expect light rainfall across most places in the capital region, isolated areas could receive moderate showers.
Meteorologists attributed the sudden shift in weather to a cyclonic circulation currently positioned over central Pakistan and adjoining regions. This weather system has increased atmospheric instability across northwest India, including Delhi-NCR, creating favourable conditions for thunderstorms and rainfall.
Weather experts indicated that this atmospheric activity is likely to become more widespread from Friday as the cyclonic system strengthens further. This could lead to additional spells of rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds across the region over the coming days.
The changing weather is also expected to bring relief from the prevailing heat. Temperatures in the national capital are likely to fall under the influence of increased cloud cover and precipitation.
In light of the adverse weather, the IMD has urged residents of Delhi-NCR to remain cautious. The department advised people to stay indoors where possible, keep away from windows, refrain from sheltering under trees, and avoid weak or temporary structures. Residents were also advised to maintain a safe distance from water bodies during the thunderstorms.
