HYDRAA Blames Cyberabad Municipal Corporation for Flooding After Hyderabad Rains

The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) on Monday blamed the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) for failing to desilt drains, which led to severe flooding during recent thundershowers in Jubilee Gardens in Kondapur, Shamshabad, Attapur, and Ramdev Baba Nagar.
HYDRAA Commissioner A V Ranganath visited these multiple affected locations on Monday to assess the situation. Following the inspection, Ranganath maintained that the accumulation of silt within the drainage systems was the primary reason for the widespread flooding across these parts of Hyderabad.
During the site visits, the inspecting team of officials from HYDRAA observed that the local drains were covered with heavy concrete slabs. According to the agency, these covered drains hindered essential maintenance work, making it virtually impossible for municipal workers to carry out regular desilting and ultimately escalating the severity of the flooding during the rains.
Local officials on the ground informed the HYDRAA Commissioner that desilting could have been carried out effectively if the storm-water drains had been built with proper access points.
To address the immediate issue, HYDRAA officials reported that their ground staff had been actively working for the past several days in the Jubilee Gardens area of Kondapur. The workers have been lifting the slabs that cover the drains to perform extensive desilting operations.
Following these observations, Commissioner Ranganath directed Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams to remove slabs over the drains wherever required. This measure aims to ensure that the desilting process can be fully completed without further structural obstruction.
HYDRAA officials also pointed out a chain reaction in the drainage system, noting that the waterlogging at Jubilee Gardens in Kondapur was directly contributing to the flooding on roads in Shamshabad, Ramdev Baba Nagar, and Attapur.
To avoid future public inconvenience, Ranganath urged multiple government bodies—including the irrigation, municipal, revenue, police, and traffic police departments—to work jointly and coordinate their efforts.
