Kenyan infant dies despite priority landing at Chennai airport

A 58-day-old infant from Kenya tragically passed away on Saturday, June 13, 2026, after a flight made an emergency priority landing at the Chennai International Airport. The infant's parents, identified as Kenyan citizens Mwai and Muthoni, were traveling to India to secure specialized medical treatment for their child’s pre-existing heart condition at a private hospital located in Manapakkam, Chennai.
During the journey, the parents noticed that the infant's health condition had begun to deteriorate rapidly onboard the aircraft. Fearing for their child's life, Mwai and Muthoni immediately alerted the cabin crew to the critical situation.
Upon being informed of the medical emergency, the flight captain took swift action and contacted aviation authorities to request an immediate priority landing at the Chennai International Airport. The priority landing was sought to ensure the infant could receive urgent medical intervention as quickly as possible.
According to local police officials, the aircraft was granted priority landing clearance, allowing it to touch down well ahead of its scheduled time. The flight landed at the Chennai airport at 7:52 a.m. on Saturday, which was approximately 23 minutes earlier than its scheduled arrival time of 8:15 a.m.
Immediately after the plane landed and came to a halt, a specialized medical team stationed at the airport rushed to examine the 58-day-old infant. Despite the rapid response and the expedited landing, the medical personnel declared the child dead after performing an initial examination.
Following the declaration of death, the body of the infant was taken to the Chengalpattu Government Medical College Hospital. Authorities confirmed that a postmortem examination would be conducted at the hospital to determine the exact cause of death. The tragic incident has left the parents, who had traveled from Kenya in hopes of saving their child, in deep grief.
