Koramangala 1st Block Residents Build Organic Pratham Garden on Vacant Plot

Residents of Koramangala 1st Block have transformed a vacant plot within their layout into a thriving organic community farm called Pratham Garden. Despite overcast weather, local residents have actively gathered to nurture banana, drumstick, and hibiscus plants on the plot, establishing a green space that serves over 1,000 people living across the layout's 362 plots.
The initiative is led by the local Resident Welfare Association (RWA). According to Padmashree Balaram, president of the RWA, a key strength of Pratham Garden is how the community draws on the knowledge and expertise of its senior citizens. Senior residents, including Rajagopal and Kousalya, have guided the layout's gardeners on critical agricultural practices.
These experienced residents suggested which plants to grow, how to support heavy banana plants when they are laden with fruit, and how to space the plants to improve their overall fruiting. Under their guidance, the community has also learned how to utilize the shade of larger plants to grow intercropped species, such as pumpkin and lemongrass.
The garden operates on a structured, self-sustaining model to fund RWA initiatives. Drumsticks harvested from Pratham Garden are distributed to residents free of charge. Meanwhile, bananas are sold at a premium rate of approximately Rs 100 per dozen.
To manage the sales, photos of each harvest are posted directly to the RWA's online group. A resident living opposite the garden assists the community by storing the harvested produce and facilitating the sales. A portion of these proceeds is continuously reinvested back into the garden, which helps sustain the cost of inputs and upkeep without placing a financial burden on any single individual.
Beyond providing fresh, organic produce, the RWA officials noted that the garden has succeeded in bringing neighbours together. It has become a dedicated community space where local residents of all age groups can meet, work side by side, and build familiarity.
