The School Education Department’s "water bells" initiative, which was introduced last year to ensure that students and teachers remained hydrated, has been largely forgotten by most government schools in Chennai.

As of June 12, 2026, the program has not been properly implemented in the city's government schools. This lack of serious enforcement has left students at risk of inadequate hydration during periods of rising temperatures.

The initiative was originally designed as a direct response to rising temperatures. Under the scheme, schools were required to ring a designated bell three times a day to serve as a reminder for students and teachers to drink water. The scheduled times for the water bells were 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.

When the initiative was first introduced, doctors and teachers welcomed the move. They recognized it as a crucial step toward preventing dehydration among both students and school staff.

However, teachers have stated that the initiative was never taken seriously by school administrations. According to their accounts, the program was not implemented properly last year when it was first launched, and has now been almost entirely forgotten by most schools in the city.

An official from the School Education Department previously emphasized that children need to stay hydrated amid rising temperatures. Despite these warnings, the lack of serious enforcement and proper implementation has meant the hydration bells no longer ring.
