AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami convened a crucial party review meeting on Saturday in Chennai to address severe electoral setbacks and a growing internal rift. The meeting focused on steadying the party ranks following a wave of defections to the rival Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party.

The high-level meeting was attended by district unit functionaries representing Chennai and Kancheepuram. Palaniswami sought to address the deep divisions that have emerged within the party ranks following recent political developments in Tamil Nadu.

Senior AIADMK leaders, including KP Munusamy, C Ponnaiyan, and B Valarmathi, were also in attendance at the meeting. These leaders participated in the discussions to help manage the unfolding internal crisis and strategic challenges currently facing the party.

The crisis follows the AIADMK's performance in the assembly polls, where the party secured 47 seats. However, subsequent consecutive defeats and the party's demotion to the third position in the 17th Assembly triggered widespread revolt among its MLAs and party functionaries.

This dissatisfaction culminated in a vertical split within the organization. Twenty-five out of the AIADMK's 47 MLAs openly rebelled against Palaniswami's leadership. During a crucial legislative event, these 25 rebel MLAs voted in favor of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s TVK government during a no-confidence motion.

In the aftermath of the vote, four of the rebelling MLAs resigned from their legislative positions to formally join the TVK. The remaining rebel legislators chose to return to the AIADMK fold, formally accepting Palaniswami’s leadership once again in order to avoid disciplinary action under the anti-defection law.

Despite their return, severe tension continues to simmer within the party. Palaniswami has taken decisive action by stripping the rebel MLAs of their official party positions. Those affected by this decision include prominent regional powerhouses SP Velumani, P Thangamani, C Vijaybaskar, C Ve Shanmugam, and KP Anbazhagam.
