PV Sindhu Beats Chen Su Yu to Reach Australian Open Semifinals

HYDERABAD — World No. 10 PV Sindhu booked her place in the semifinals of the Australian Open on June 12, 2026, after securing a dominant victory at the Quaycentre in Sydney.
The third-seeded Indian star delivered a commanding performance against Chinese Taipei’s Chen Su Yu. Sindhu controlled both games of the match from the beginning, ultimately sealing a 21-6, 21-9 victory. The entire quarterfinal match lasted just 27 minutes.
With this win, Sindhu has secured her second semifinal appearance of the 2026 season. She previously reached the last four at the Malaysia Open 2026.
The victory sets up a highly anticipated semifinal matchup for the two-time Olympic medallist. Sindhu will face top seed and three-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi of Japan.
The upcoming clash will be the 29th meeting between Sindhu and Yamaguchi. While Sindhu holds a lifetime 15-13 advantage in their head-to-head record, the Japanese top seed has won four of their last five encounters.
Yamaguchi earned her spot in the semifinals by defeating India's Tanvi Sharma in her quarterfinal match. The Japanese shuttler won that match 21-14, 21-14 in 32 minutes.
Meanwhile, in the men’s doubles category at the tournament, the Indian pair of Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun were forced to retire during the second game of their match against opponents from Chinese Taipei.
