Telangana Schools Reopen as Breakfast Scheme Relaunches After Summer Break

On Monday, June 15, 2026, schools across Telangana reopened for the fresh 2026-27 academic year following a 52-day summer vacation, marked by the relaunch of the student breakfast scheme. While Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar joined the relaunch event at Government High School Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad, overall student attendance across the state remained thin on the first day because the reopening coincided with Amavasya.
The schools were originally scheduled to commence their terms on June 12. However, the School Education department officially deferred the reopening date to June 15, citing representations that had been received from various stakeholders.
When classrooms finally opened on Monday, many schools reported low student attendance. This thin turnout was attributed to Amavasya, the no moon day, which is traditionally considered an inauspicious day for starting any new beginning.
Alongside the return of the students, the Telangana Congress government officially relaunched the school breakfast scheme and introduced a new milk scheme in select government and local body schools. This relaunch follows a period of two academic years during which students were deprived of their first meal of the day at school.
To mark the relaunch of these nutritional programs, Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar visited the Government High School Raj Bhavan, where he dined alongside the students. During the reopening day event, officials also distributed textbooks and notebooks to the students who were present.
According to state enrollment data, a total of 6,873,019 students were enrolled in 39,789 schools across Telangana during the preceding 2025-26 academic year. Of this total state enrollment, 1,680,910 students were admitted to 24,219 government and local body schools. Meanwhile, 4,358,729 students were registered in 11,832 private unaided schools across the state.
