Telangana Transport Department Extends Fancy Number Registration Deadline to Two Months

The Telangana Transport Department in Hyderabad announced on 11 June 2026 that it has officially extended the deadline for reserving fancy or special vehicle registration numbers. This decision aims to provide greater convenience to the owners of newly purchased vehicles.
Under the newly updated guidelines, vehicle owners are now permitted to select and reserve their preferred registration numbers within a period of two months from the date of issuance of their Temporary Registration (TR).
Previously, under the existing 'Vahan' system, a Temporary Registration issued for a new vehicle remained valid for a period of only 30 days. To offer more convenience to vehicle owners, the Transport Department decided to allow this extended two-month window from the TR issuance date for reserving fancy or special registration numbers.
Transport Department officials have actively advised vehicle owners who opted for a fancy number at the time of their vehicle purchase, but have not yet officially reserved it, to do so at the earliest.
The department also issued a warning regarding the automated system rules. If a fancy or special number is not reserved within the designated two-month period, the 'Vahan' software will automatically assign a routine or random registration number to the vehicle.
According to the department, once the two-month deadline expires, the 'Vahan' platform will automatically generate and allot a standard registration number. After this automatic generation takes place, there will be no further opportunity for the owner to select a fancy or special number.
Consequently, the Transport Department has urged all eligible vehicle owners to complete the official reservation process within the stipulated timeframe to avoid the automatic allocation of a regular registration number by the system.
