A devastating fire broke out in a five-storey residential building in Southeast Delhi's Tughlakabad Extension during the intervening night of June 11 and 12, 2026, killing three members of a family and leaving two others critically injured.

The blaze, which is suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit on the ground floor, prompted a major rescue operation by local police and fire officials.

The deceased have been identified as Pankaj, aged 28, his mother Guddi, aged 50, and his sister Soni, aged 20. The injured family members, who remain in critical condition, are Pankaj's 18-year-old sister Moni and his 70-year-old grandmother.

According to the police, the Govindpuri police station received a PCR call regarding the fire at approximately 2:24 AM on June 12. Local police, fire tenders, and CATS ambulances were immediately mobilised to the scene.

Initial inquiries suggest that the fire started in the ground-floor parking area and quickly engulfed several parked vehicles. The destroyed vehicles included three scooters, two motorcycles, one bicycle, and an electric scooter that was reportedly being charged at the time.

As heavy smoke filled the building, residents became trapped on the upper floors. By 4:25 AM, the fire had spread to all five floors. The ground, first, and second floors of the building were completely gutted, while the upper floors sustained partial damage.

During the coordinated rescue operation, emergency responders evacuated a total of eight occupants. At 3:45 AM, five people were rescued and rushed to nearby hospitals. Firefighters later reached the terrace, where they cut open a locked gate to rescue two young women who had sought refuge from the smoke.

The rescued individuals and injured victims were transported to Safdarjung Hospital and the AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment. While a short circuit is the suspected cause, officials noted that a detailed investigation is underway to confirm the exact trigger of the fire.
