The Velachery-Tambaram High Road in Velachery is set to be renamed after Major Mukund Varadarajan, according to an announcement on June 13, 2026. This renaming serves to honor the memory of the fallen soldier who was killed during a counter-terrorism operation.

Major Varadarajan was killed in action while on deputation to the 4th Battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles. The counter-terrorism operation in which he lost his life took place in Jammu and Kashmir.

For his extraordinary bravery and sacrifice during the operation, Major Varadarajan was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra. The Ashoka Chakra is recognized as India's highest peacetime gallantry award.

The decision to rename the Velachery-Tambaram High Road ensures that the legacy of Major Mukund Varadarajan and his service to the nation will be permanently recognized along this prominent local route.
