The Tambaram Corporation Council has approved a resolution to rename the 16-kilometre Velachery–Tambaram High Road in honour of Major Mukund Varadharajan. The key arterial road, which runs through the localities of Velachery and Tambaram, will be officially named "Major Mukund Varadharajan Road."

The resolution was passed by the council on Thursday. The civic body took up the renaming proposal after receiving prior approval from the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department.

The renaming serves to recognize the sacrifice of Major Mukund Varadharajan, an Indian Army officer who was killed in action. Major Varadharajan was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry honour, for his bravery.

By dedicating this major 16-kilometre arterial road to his memory, the local administration aims to honour his legacy and sacrifice.
